Moving images (Rebecca Hobbs) Research: Still films

"Look at life" by George Lucas, 1965 (Still film)

A still film by George Lucas 1965, film student "Look at life" working solely with still photos, very effective and powerful in my opinion.

I have an idea working with stills as my foundation for my film, incorporating certain camera moving techniques as well (e.g. Whip pan movement, extreme close up and extreme wide shots).

STILL FILMS

The link above is exclusively based on "still films". Ranging from different categories of film styles (e.g. Art films, animation, docs etc). I found a animated still film called "we the masses" immensely fascinating. I was thinking in the lines of doing a remix of still life shots and animated.

Moving images (Rebecca Hobbs) Experiment Pan movement

Whip Pan Movement Experiment

Experimenting with a whip pan movement, it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. There are quite alot of errors in my filming, with this technique. Firstly the way I hold the camera is not steady, timing in relation to their conversation is off. The sound in the background is distracting creating confusion etc.

I probably will need to find a better place to film that is sound proof? or a suitable location. And maybe understand the camera better in regards to filming.

Moving images (Rebecca Hobbs) Research: Over the shoulder shot/ establishing shot

OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT

"No Country for Old Men" Directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_0LNOfRub8

The short video above is an example of "Over the Shoulder Shot".  This sort of shot is usually used to capture someone in conversation or something in relation to the subject. A perspective shot from the back of the shoulder and head, framing the shot. Which this camera angel gives a insight into the two characters point of view of each other.

ESTABLISHING SHOT

"The Lord of the Rings" Directed by Peter Jackson

Here we have a camera movement technique known as an "Establishing shot" which sets up the scene.

Moving images ( Rebecca Hobbs) Research

PAN MOVEMENT

Here is a short video from the film "Breathless" directed by Jean-Luc Godard, an example of a
pan movement. I find it very interesting as it follows the subject horizontally as shown above.

  WHIP PAN MOVEMENT

Whip Pan camera movement momentarily involves a faster movement of the camera, yet the same rules still apply as a normal pan movement. I have an interest in using these two techniques to portray the story of the video I will be working on.

Moving images (Rebecca Hobbs) Research on video artists

"THE ARENA" ( SHAUN EL C. LEONARDO)

Shaun El C. Leonardo, "The Arena"

Shaun El C. Leonardo explores masculine identity through power and vulnerability of the male persona. I  find this work interesting as it has him wrestling against his opponent and a crowd of spectators. As though this is a actual professional match between two athletes. The music playing in the background while they are wrestling is very intriguing and weird. A sense of power struggle between the two combatants and the music changing to their engagement as the tension builds. Sets an unpredicted unseen struggle of the man within their own society.

"ART MUST BE BEAUTIFUL" (MARINA ABRAMOVIC)

Marina Abramovic "Art must be Beautiful" Copenhagen Denmark, 1975

Marina Abramovic film reminds me of the struggle of trying to be perfect and beautiful in the eyes of society and this world.

"CUT PIECE" (YOKO ONO)

Yoko Ono "Cut Piece" July 20, 1964 performance.

Yoko Ono an Japanese artist. This performance is known as "Cut Piece" this work of hers for me portrays the desires of human nature manifesting itself in the form of performance. Inviting the audience to cut pieces off from her garment. Without limits within our lives we become unreasonable and aggressive, I believe that aspect is challenging in it's own and very intimidating to understand.
