RRaw (Cassandra Barnett) Political/Street Art

Political and street art

Political and street art does play a role within my life and the community I live in, South Auckland, (Mangere). Mangere is a very multi-cultural suburb and is diverse in many ways. At times the community I live in especially the youth struggle to voice out their thoughts, opinions on grave matters, concerning their lively hoods, culture, identity and on political issues. From my experience as a (Tongan) verbal communication is widely expressed by the elderly and adults, while the youth is taught to be quiet and speak when they are told to. Is one of the many examples, of old tradition and beliefs, that I believe have caused issues. In the street the arts is a way of escape for those that feel confined or oppressed within their own cultures.

Political cultural issues is what i'll address in my street art works, creating street art which connects to the hidden voices that are not heard. Utilising my environment and my own experiences and stories from those that have faced the same issues within their own cultures. Expressive and abstract techniques is the formula I would use. And images of black silhouettes to personify the hidden voices with a cultural electrical remix with a modern twist. These works would be solely for the community and its people and for the walls of its streets. So it may help create awareness to form better relationships and understanding that the old ways is sometimes not the best way.

I conclude political/street 'art' both are a necessity in my circle of interest, for it helps me broaden my own understanding of my environment and the community I live in.

Lens class (Rebecca Hobbs) experimenting with shutter speed

RRAW (Cassandra Barnett) Manifesto

Freedom of speech loud and resilient unique and raw, let that little voice 'ROAR'. I express thoughts through the whispers of my breath, resonating endlessly. Let me speak and paint a picture of the ill structure of society, let my speech reflect what we call human nature. Let me be heard, of the wars that surround me. Let me speak for my thoughts are free.

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.” Voltaire

Building images (Francis Hansen) Chosen illustrator artist- Mario Hugo

Mario Hugo is a designer, and illustrator who uses old books and buys old books, extracting the thick blank pages. As his chosen medium, he explores the paper from these old books, texture, the way they smell etc. Then creates conceptual imagery formed with fantasy and abstraction and portraits linked and twisted with geometrical shapes, letters. Initiating a combination of ink, acrylic and graphite. Primarily his works are black and white.

Lens Class (Rebecca Hobbs) Experiment/Research (7)

Photo taken during work with a touch of photoshop. Experimenting on my ideas for my self-portrait, still need more development. Probably next time I’ll use a room that is all white with some lighting to give my photos a more dramatic look!

Here’s a photo of my little brother, still playing around with black and white and color through photoshop.

Schindler's List

Lens Class (Rebecca Hobbs) Experimentations/process: 5

My experiments are based on the idea of our body being a canvas. Painting the body, face all white and applying a mixture of colored paints. Which symbolises the many influences or the scope of another person perception of me. I was captivated by "Schindler's List" a film in black and white with a hint of color (red) depicted on a little child's coat. Signifying the atrocities through that time in history. Exploiting that idea of black and white and color within my own context.

The process was to paint my little brother
(George) all white as a canvas. Then I applied
a stroke of yellow and red, which he identified
"that is mum and dad", continuing on to say
"that is my first form of contact and influence"

From here I just added more paint strokes with purpose and meaning to my subject  (George). I then upload the final image on to photoshop, duplicated the image then changed the duplicate to black and white and erased the grey areas on his face for the strokes of color to show through.
