Raw (Cassandra Barnette) IMAGE CRITIQUE 5: KOJI KAKINUMA

Koji Kakinuma, Phoenix, 2001

A painting by Artist Koji Kakinuma it consists of a black heavy background and gold gestural marks.

The black backdrop is like an intense dark night and the gold expressive marks are like a sparkle. Like a child running around on the night of ‘Guy Fawkes’ joyfully dancing, waving their sparkle in the night sky, leaving meaningful traces of light. It illuminates marks and continuous lines in the air and a moment of tranquility and expression of freedom.

It invokes meanings of imprinting a moment, thought of identity through the act of painting. Capturing identity in a singular or in multiple brush strokes.

It leads me to imagine that every dot, spot, dash and mark is like pieces of a puzzle of a person identity. Scattered in the vast space of the unconscious. And these puzzles act as a lantern, guiding the individual back to their roots.

The psychological aspect of the inner I believe is portrayed in this painting, drawing from the unconscious. I believe it depicts identity and the sense of freedom through the means of expressive painting.
