Moving images (Rebecca Hobbs) Application/ Experiment/ Research

Editing techniques "Cut in and Cut out"

Moving image class on Wednesday 18th of June 2014, was based on editing methods. There were many approaches that my lecture taught and stated about editing film, I found two editing strategies relevant to my self-portrait.

The two links below connect directly to editing techniques that we looked at in class. Cut-out and the Cut-in method portrayed here in these two films "Japanese Psychological thriller, 2LDK" and Tarantino's "Sukiyaki Western Django".

Application/Experiment Cut in and Cut Out

In these two short videos above, I experimented with the "cut out" technique portrayed in the film Japanese Psychological thriller, 2LDK. The images are not accurately consistent, frames fall out of position distorting the sequence.

In this video I applied the "cut in" and "match cut" technique, I think it almost works well, yet there are slight inaccuracies. Maybe spending more time editing, might help.

Application/Experimentation over the shoulder shots and low key.

I wanted to portray a dark and intense atmosphere, applying the low-key light technique. Casting an intimidating aura. Experimented with over the shoulder shots, to grasp that feeling of intensity between the two. Catching a glimpse of their faces, depicting the situation, that is about to unfold. Also I applied a low shutter speed to capture movement in order to express the engagement.
