JOHN PULE, There Will Be Another Time, 2006, oil, ink and pencil on canvas, 201 × 188 cm

The composition and illustration of this work has an organic feel to it. The green and black smudged together forming what seems like clouds or floating islands. Vines hanging down with the green seeping through enriching the leaves and flowers that grows from it. I get the impression of a garden in the heavens, mythical fish like creatures with their enormous jaws wide open ready to devour. And yet there is a sense of guardianship I feel these creatures portray. The bird descending down as if stalking its prey, the gate sealed up so no one could enter. Expressive marks igniting a feeling of confusion and the symbol of Christianity the “cross” placed right on top. It gives me the sense of a new belief being adopted as the old belief slowly is forgotten.  Hence why I believe the fish like creature being consumed by the green organic cloud resembles this old system of beliefs. And the bird as a symbolism of migration of people leaving their home land verging into a new world. Which the fish’s with their jaws wide open, signifies people in defiance against the adoption of a new belief.
